The Gospel in 2 Timothy

This text is a part of the Christ in All of Scripture sequence.

A Name to Endure

Paul’s second letter to Timothy is a name to endurance amid opposition and struggling for the sake of the gospel. The theme of endurance is present all through the letter by using Greek phrases that variously categorical the thought (2 Tim. 2:10, 12, 24; 3:11; 4:5). Struggling for the gospel is explicitly acknowledged in 2 Tim. 1:8, 12 (cf. 2 Tim. 2:3; 3:10–11).

Paul’s exhortation to endure has formed the very construction of the letter. After expressing his affectionate greetings to Timothy, his “beloved child,” and recounting his fond remembrance of the younger man’s religious startnings (2 Tim. 1:1–5), Paul points an prolonged exhortation to endurance (2 Tim. 1:6–2:13). This exhortation begins with a robust name to gospel-centered endurance (2 Tim. 1:6–14), adopted by contrasting actual life examples of two who did not endure and one who did (2 Tim. 1:15–18). Paul then resumes his name to gospel endurance (2 Tim. 2:1–13), with directives to be strengthened by the grace that’s in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 2:1–2), to share in struggling as an excellent soldier (2 Tim. 2:3–7), to recollect Jesus Christ as preached in Paul’s gospel (2 Tim. 2:8–9), and to endure by the work of Christ (2 Tim. 2:10–13).

Within the subsequent part (2 Tim. 2:14–3:9) Paul supplies knowledge for enduring false lecturers. Timothy is charged to rightly deal with the phrase (2 Tim. 2:14–19), stay an honorable vessel, be prepared for each good work (2 Tim. 2:20–21), keep away from ignorant controversies (2 Tim. 2:23), and proper opponents with gentleness (2 Tim. 2:24–26). As Paul strikes to the top of his letter (2 Tim. 3:10–4:8), he points a mounting, ascending name to endure for the gospel. Paul encourages Timothy to comply with his personal astonishing instance of endurance (2 Tim. 3:10–13), persevering with within the God-breathed Scriptures that make souls smart for salvation by religion in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 3:14–17) and taking on the gorgeous name to evangelise the phrase (2 Tim. 4:1–8).

The apostle closes with a transferring instance of putting up with to the top in gospel ministry (2 Tim. 4:9–22). Second Timothy is, so to talk, Paul’s final will and testomony and, as such, it bears energy and soul-moving piquancy—all rooted in the fantastic thing about the gospel of grace (2 Tim. 1:8–11).
