“However the Lord hurled an excellent wind upon the ocean, and there was a mighty tempest on the ocean, in order that the ship threatened to interrupt up […] And the Lord appointed an excellent fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was within the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.” Jonah 1:4, 17
This story of the prophet Jonah and his misadventures has captured the imaginations of generations of youngsters. It was one of many first Bible tales I turned accustomed to as a teenager.
Whereas being swallowed by an excellent fish seems like a tremendous and scary journey — and it undoubtedly was — what strikes me now as I learn this highly effective story is how unrelentingly God pursued his reluctant prophet. As a substitute of a lifeboat, God introduced a “life fish”!
Discover the verbs “hurled” (the wind) and “appointed” (the fish). These items didn’t simply “occur” to Jonah. They had been the intentional actions of the pursuing God. The guide of Jonah, from starting to finish, reveals the God who loves women and men sufficient to pursue them till they repent (flip round), give up, and provides their hearts to him.
Who do you relate to within the story of Jonah? The reluctant prophet who runs from God, not absolutely surrendered? The individuals of Nineveh who had been wandering in darkness? Possibly the unbelieving however good-hearted sailors who did the whole lot they may to maintain from throwing Jonah overboard? How in regards to the huge, obedient fish that was keen for use for God’s objective?
Wherever you end up as we speak, you may take consolation from the guide of Jonah that the Creator God who instructions the wind and the fish will even take care of you!
God of the storm, who cares for each human life, educate me to belief you no matter comes. Thanks for pursuing me together with your love! Amen.
