Pharrell Williams, Netflix Team Up for New Series about Finding Talented Gospel Singers

Hampton Roads native Pharrell Williams returned to his hometown to film an unscripted project titled Voice of Fire, where he searched for young, talented gospel singers in his hometown, The Christian Post reports.

The project will premiere on Netflix on November 20 and will be part of a series.

One of the main characters is choir director Patrick Riddick and Pharrell’s uncle, Bishop Ezekiel Williams who is the general overseer, pastor, and founder of Faith World Ministries.

According to Billboard Magazine, the point of the docu-series is to build “one of the worlds most inspiring gospel choirs.” The news of the project originally was announced at the Essence Festival on June 5. Pharrell will be one of the executive producers. Other producers include Mimi Valds for I am OTHER and Arthur Smith and Frank Sinton for A. Smith & Co, and Bianca Barnes-Williams.

According to Pharrell, the reason he is doing this is because his roots come from the church. “Pharrell and I grew up together in the same church. We came up in the Pentecostal Holiness Church. His grandmother was our church mother. It lets you know the Bible is right. It says to train up a child and the way they should go and when he is older, they will not depart, Riddick told The Christian Post in a recent interview. Riddick also gave God praise for Pharrell’s return to God and his passion for this project.

Pharrell Williams is an internationally recognized pop star and music producer known for his singles “Happy” and “Come Get It Bae.” He is also known for starting the Virginia Beach yearly concert Something in the Water, which has gathered some of the most high-profile bands across the world to perform each year.

Pharrell is the oldest of three sons to his parents Carolyn and Pharaoh Williams. His mom was a teacher and his dad was a handyman.
