Pricey Gov. Lee: Pray with These Brothers in Christ on Dying Row

Just lately Gov. Invoice Lee was challenged by a reporter to personally witness Tennessee’s subsequent execution. Gov. Lee stated whereas he had thought of doing so, he has by no means felt compelled to take action. I can perceive that.

As a pastor, I go to dying row recurrently. My church has ordained one of many males on dying row. He’s now thought-about one of many pastors of our church. His title is listed in our program each Sunday. Personally, I think about him to be my pastor.

I do know all the lads on dying row. I think about all of them mates. Over the previous yr, I’ve stated goodbye to 5 of my mates. Between now and April 2020, three extra are scheduled to die. I perceive why Gov. Lee doesn’t really feel compelled to witness the barbaric act of execution. I’m against capital punishment on ethical and non secular grounds. However that’s not what this editorial is about.

The crimes for which all my mates have been convicted are horrible. The brutality of these acts are inexcusable. My coronary heart breaks for the household and mates of the victims. I pray God will grant them peace, consolation, and style. I perceive their want for justice. I simply imagine there’s one other method, a greater method, for justice to be served. Restorative justice is a greater path than punitive justice. However once more, I perceive their harm. I misplaced a member of the family to homicide. I preached his funeral.

What I don’t perceive is why Gov. Lee won’t go to Unit 2 at Riverbend Most Safety Institute and pray with the lads who’ve requested him to return and pray with them. In June, 32 males from dying row signed a letter that has been hand-delivered to the governor. One of many males who signed the letter is now useless, killed by the hands of the Tennessee State authorities. The boys’s letter merely learn, “We understand you are a man of faith and we would like to ask you to please come pray with us.”

I don’t perceive why Gov. Lee has ignored their request.

Gov. Lee is a person of religion.
Gov. Lee is a person of prayer.
Gov. Lee has spent a lot of his grownup life concerned in jail ministry.
Gov. Lee talks in regards to the want for jail reform.

Gov. Lee ran his marketing campaign championing his religion in Jesus and his perception in forgiveness and redemption, even for many who have been convicted of doing unspeakable issues.

But, Gov. Lee refuses to acknowledge a request to go and pray with the lads on dying row. Many of those males have dedicated their lives to Jesus. Most are males of religion. All are human beings. None are monsters. These males are greater than property of the Tennessee Division of Corrections. They’re Gov. Lee’s brothers in Christ.

They aren’t asking for mercy. They aren’t asking for clemency. They’re merely asking their brother to return and pray with them. I don’t perceive Gov. Lee’s refusal to honor their request.

The final individual Jesus prayed with earlier than He died by state execution, was a person condemned to die by state execution.

Gov. Lee, please be like Jesus and pray with the lads in Unit 2.

It could be an honor for me to introduce you to my mates.
